meet the expats

Hello, You! We're The Holdens. I'm Cree, the writer of We ate. We loved. We traveled. These two are the loves of my life, J (out of respect for his privacy, we'll call him J) and Sic (a nickname for her on the blog as well). J and I have been married since 2011 and boy, has it been a wonderful journey. We met in my hometown of Charleston, South Carolina and it's been a fairytale ever since. We dated, got married and shortly after my husband got deployed for 6 months. It was the longest 6 months of my life, but when he was returned to me, we made plans of our future, things we'd do and then we got a curve ball thrown at us, I was pregnant and we got orders to move to Germany for the next 4 years. I was filled with many emotions, fear being the strongest because I had never been so far away from my family, on top of being pregnant. Obviously, we made it through and it was a very growth full, and rewarding experience. May 2013 we arrived and my, how my wanderlust has begun to spread it's wings. This first year wasn't filled with much travel as my daughter was born with clubfeet, but now that we're coming to a point of less appointments, hospital stays and stress, we're going to dive right into Europe, and all it's beauty.

My goal with this blog is to share recipes I come up with that are inspired by the places we visit, along with share the struggles and joys of being expats, including helping other parents out there who may have a child with clubfeet.

Well, here is some little fun facts & loves: I have watched anime since I was small, all thanks to my father and it's been a love affair since then. I collect comics, maps, globes,  tea mugs, and wine. I love the smell of new books and wish I was crafty. I have a fear of the dark, and I'm not ashamed to say it. (I blame my mother letting me enjoy all my favorite horror movies as a child and me still enjoying them now.) Luckily, my husband enjoys video games, anime, and all things geeky as much as I do! He's a trekkie, and he is not ashamed to let anyone know it! I love sweets, and it's my downfall everyday as I battle weight gain from my medicine to control my rheumatoid arthritis. I always have my camera on me. I love coloring/changing my hair constantly. I am passionate about social justice issues / feminist issues and I'm not one to hold my tongue. I am have only had 1 best friend my entire life. (11 years and going). I love the poppies, polaroids, and my daughter's feet. Enough about me, you can learn more along the way!

We're just a set of expats, trying to find more reasons to love life at every turn. That includes all the bumps and bruises along the way. We've made it through the rest of our challenges, we aren't going to stop now!
